Dubrovnik, City of Cats

There are cats everywhere in Dubrovnik. I'm not sure why this is, but you see them perpetually prowling the old city streets, hanging around cafes hoping for seafood from sympathetic diners. Apparently, they are often successful.

Yesterday was a most beautiful day. After rain showers the day before, Tuesday dawned clear and bright. We started the day by walking around the old walls that surround the city. The view was incredible. The sea stretched out a perfect blue-green into forever, islands dotting the horizon. By the time we got to the part of the walls behind the city, the view was even more incredible. Dubrovnik can feel like medieval Disneyland, given the number of tourists milling about in it, but it is easy to understand why it is such an appealing place.

Dubrovnik from the Walls

Yesterday afternoon we all took a ferry to the island of Lokrum, which is less then a kilometer away from the city. The island is lovely. No one lives there, but there is a monastery, and it is surrounded by beautiful rocky beaches. We spent the afternoon sunning on a warm slab of stone, and then swam for a bit. Despite the water not being very warm, it was delightful.

Peacocks on Lokrum

After this, we took a boat tour all around Lokrum. Being Slavs, we started singing. It was only us on the boat, but our guide and the driver were apparently delighted. We sang one of the Croatian songs we know, which mentions a place called Slavonia. "I am from there," exclaimed the guide. "Do you want to learn a song from there?"

It turns out that the had sung Croatian folk music about 15 years ago. She proceeded to teach us a song, and then made us keep singing for her once we had reached the pier.

Today was lovely also, though much more low-key. We went to the market this morning, and then attempted to visit a smaller village outside of Dubrovnik, but were foiled by bus schedules. I took a nap and a shower instead.
